At the NRMA we are committed to child safety and prioritise the safety, best interests and rights of every child, whilst on our sites or engaging in our services.
We're looking for a passionate and experienced Child Safety Officer to join our team in this newly created role, reporting directly to our Head of Safety where you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with Business Unit leaders and representatives across the Group to ensure our policies, systems, processes and practices align with the National Child Safety Standards, and our legislative obligations in all jurisdictions in which we work.
The role will strengthen our child safety systems and governance, support compliance, using continual improvement and knowledge of changing legislation to ensure our policies, procedures, practices, training and instruction are reviewed and maintained.
This full-time permanent role offers a hybrid work arrangement across our Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney CBD offices and working from home, as agreed and required for the role.
What You'll Do
As the Child Safety Officer, you will:
- Develop and manage a strategic Child Safety Framework, ensuring assurance and compliance with all legislative obligations, the National Child Safe Standards and relevant jurisdictional requirements.
- Design, review, maintain and communicate the Group’s Child Safety Framework, including policies, procedures, the Code of Conduct, Child Safe Standards, complaints management and reporting requirements.
- Coordinate Child Safe initiatives and governance activities, including procedures and reporting systems that enable effective oversight, monitoring and continuous improvement.
- Prepare reports and provide recommendations on child safety compliance, performance and breaches to senior leaders and relevant governance forums, including the CEO, CFO, ARMC, GM Risk & Audit and People & Culture.
- Ensure compliance with all jurisdictional requirements for Working with Children Checks or equivalent, including the management of disclosures and notifications received from regulatory authorities.
- Ensure processes and procedures relating to Working with Children Checks are followed, appropriate records are maintained, and any issues are identified, escalated and addressed.
- Streamline Working with Children Check and child safety processes across recruitment, induction, onboarding, movement between jurisdictions, external verification and offboarding.
- Consult with leaders and Business Unit representatives to establish resource requirements across the Group and within each Business Unit to support the implementation of Child Safe Standards.
- Coach, mentor and support Business Unit Child Safe representatives to build their capability and enable the effective implementation of child safety policies, processes and procedures.
- Embed Child Safe practices across the Group and support Business Units to understand and comply with their Child Safe obligations, including providing strong cultural capability regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
- Apply a risk-based approach to proposed and current child-related activities, working with Business Units to identify risks, trends, systemic issues and improvement opportunities, and develop strategies to eliminate or minimise risks to children.
- Act as the point of escalation for child safety complaints, concerns and incidents, ensuring matters are appropriately addressed and documented, and maintain an up-to-date Training Needs Analysis to support the development and delivery of Child Safe and Working with Children Check training.
What You'll Bring
- A tertiary qualification in Law, Social Work, Psychology, Safety, Risk, Compliance or Child Education
- Proven experience in supporting change management initiatives in a large organisation
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of National Child Safety Standards, legislation and assurance frameworks
- Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering programmes of work and projects where the outcomes improve organisational safety and compliance
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the development of strategic & communication plans, presentations and report writing.
- Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills
