What to Expect During an Interview
Job interviews can be nerve-wracking, but knowing what to expect can help ease your mind and set you up for success. Whether you're preparing for your first job interview or looking to refine your approach, this guide will step you through a typical interview process and what to anticipate.
Pre-Interview Preparation
Before you step in, or log into an interview preparation is key. Potential employers expect you will have a solid understanding of the company and the role you have applied for:
- Research the company – Visit the company's website, read recent articles, and understand its values.
- Review the job description – Ensure you understand the key responsibilities and required skills.
- Practice common interview questions – Prepare responses for questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “Why do you want to work with us?”
- What to wear – If unsure of the dress code, opt for smart/professional attire.
Initial Screening
Many companies start with a phone interview as a preliminary screening process. This helps recruiters assess whether you meet (mutual) expectations before moving forward.
- Expect questions about your background, experience, and availability.
- Keep your responses concise and highlight your most relevant skills.
In-Person or Virtual Interview
This is the main stage of the hiring process where you’ll meet with hiring managers, team members, or talent partners. The format may vary depending on the company and role but generally includes:
- Behavioural questions – Expect questions that require you to provide an example to highlight how you have achieved an outcome.
- Technical or job-specific questions – Be ready to demonstrate your expertise in the role’s required skills.
- Culture based questions – Employers want to know how well you align with their team and company values.
- Case studies or tasks – Some roles require practical assessments (generally you will have received pre-warning of these scenarios in order to prepare).
Questions for the Interviewer
At the end of the interview, you’ll have the opportunity to ask your own questions. Come prepped with a couple of questions to highlight your interest.
Examples include:
- “Can you tell me more about the team I’d be working with?”
- “What are the biggest challenges facing the team/department right now?”
- “What are the next steps in the hiring process?”
Post-Interview Follow-Up
After the interview, it's a good strategy to leave a positive lasting impression. If relevant, send a thank-you email within 24 hours of your interview. Express your gratitude and reiterate your interest in the role.
Final Thoughts
Interviews can be unpredictable, but preparation and confidence go a long way. Stay calm, be yourself, and showcase why you’re the perfect fit for the role. Good luck!
